Working Group: Sustainable Society

Sustainable SocietySustainable societies should ensure the maximization of opportunities for physical, social and mental health to enable people of all age groups and across the socio-economic gradient to take an active part in society without discrimination and to enjoy an independent and good quality of life. Promising practices and new ideas, focusing on the realization of related opportunities will be thoroughly analyzed in this working group.

Demographic change and ageing populations pose major economic (sustainability of health and long term care, of pension systems, of work force supply) and social challenges (sustainability of social services, social exclusion faced by older people). Therefore, it is not sufficient to develop an environmentally sustainable society: social integrity, economic efficiency, and the well-being of people and community should be addressed as well. In a sustainable society, each member should be able to reach their full health potential, alongside equal access to work, housing, education and recreational activities. The development of a sustainable society can be judged by the quality of its population’s health and well-being and how fairly natural resources are distributed across the social spectrum.

The sustainable society group will additionally address cross-cutting issues that are also of relevance for the other working groups.
